ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION LAWS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE ON CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES

Abstract

Abstract: Environmental degradation has emerged as one of the most pressing global concerns of the twenty-first century. Rapid industrialization, urbanization, population growth, and excessive exploitation of natural resources have significantly affected ecosystems, biodiversity, and human well-being. In response to these challenges, environmental protection laws have evolved to regulate human activities and promote sustainable development. Sustainable development seeks to balance economic growth, social welfare, and environmental conservation to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This research paper examines the relationship between environmental protection laws and sustainable development from a legal perspective. It analyzes international environmental frameworks, national legislation, judicial interventions, and contemporary environmental challenges. The study highlights the effectiveness of legal mechanisms in promoting environmental sustainability while identifying existing gaps in implementation and enforcement. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for stronger legal institutions, public participation, technological innovation, and international cooperation to address emerging environmental concerns.
