FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN INDIA: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON TRENDS, DETERMINANTS, AND SECTORAL DYNAMICS

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) serves as the foundation for the macroeconomic progress and structural transformation of many developing nations, acting as a critical catalyst for sustained economic growth. It involves foreign capital bridging the structural gap between domestic savings and the optimal investment requirements of an economy, thereby facilitating the convergence of diverse economic aspects within a country. Through FDI, international capital is strategically deployed across vital sectors such as services, manufacturing, transport, technology, productivity-enhancing infrastructure, and hospitality, playing a crucial role in India's modern economic development paradigm. Various complex factors, including long-term economic stability, the regulatory and institutional environment, proactive sectoral policies, political stability, and physical as well as digital infrastructure, heavily influence the magnitude and direction of FDI inflows. Despite exhibiting both merits and distinct demerits, the trajectory of Indian FDI is highly noteworthy. This empirical study primarily focuses on analyzing the long-term trends and structural patterns of FDI inflow into India, aiming to provide a holistic overview of the country's investment climate. The study also concentrates heavily on identifying the primary determinants of FDI and understanding the fundamental economic necessity for FDI in India, incorporating detailed sector-wise and year-wise empirical analyses covering recent financial periods up to 2025. The insights gathered provide clear policy directions for maximizing capital utilization and economic productivity.
